2010 PAPG/PTTC Spring Field Trip and Core Workshop

“A TALE OF TWO SHALES”

MARCELLUS AND UTICA SHALES IN NEW YORK STATE:

FIELD TRIP AND CORE WORKSHOP

The primary aim of the core workshop and field trip is to enhance understanding of the stratigraphy, depositional environment and natural gas potential of black shales in the Utica and Marcellus Groups of New York State.  The cores, outcrops and presentations will serve as starting points for discussion amongst the field trip attendees and leaders. The event will start with a half-day core workshop held at the Holiday Inn in Auburn, NY.  There will be two long cores on display, one from the Marcellus and one from the Utica.  Presentations will be given on the geochemistry, sedimentology and stratigraphy of the cores and on the vertical and lateral distribution of organic-rich shale in these formations across the State. There will also be discussion of depositional and stratigraphic models for each of the shales and their correlative and interbedded limestones.  Day two will consist of a field trip to quarries and outcrops that show key elements of the stratigraphy of both the Utica and Marcellus. An evening discussion and wrap-up will follow the dinner at the Holiday Inn. Day three will consist of one or two field stops in the Marcellus Formation near the type section in Marcellus, NY to be concluded by lunchtime on Sunday.

SCHEDULE: The bus will depart from Pittsburgh at 7:00 AM on Friday, April 30th, 2010 and travel to Auburn, New York, where we will check into the hotel.  This leg of the trip will take approximately 5 hours.  After hotel check in, we will break for lunch then meet up with the trip leaders and attend a lecture and core workshop at the hotel.  On Saturday, we will travel into the field to visit Utica and Marcellus outcrops, upon arrival back at the hotel, an evening discussion and wrap-up will follow a dinner at the Holiday Inn.  We will conclude the trip with more Marcellus outcrops on Sunday morning.  After lunch on Sunday, we will return to Pittsburgh.  We will be staying overnight on Friday and Saturday at the Holiday Inn in Auburn, New York.  The outcrops for this field trip are in the Central New York, Finger Lakes Region.  Plan to arrive back in Pittsburgh by 6 or 7 PM on Sunday, May 2nd, 2010.
